The smart man who is Robert Mugabe has driven his country into despair. Today it was reported that Zimbabwe will collapse within six months. Aid workers were briefed about this and told to prepare for crisis. An aid worker is making more money than the police. Whilst RM (Robert Mugabe) is making shrines in honour to himself, and giving his friends land, the rest of this formally great country suffers. It seems that the dummies, or the evil farmers who initially balked at giving up their land for free to Mugabe's cronies were right. They claimed, and it would have been about 8 years ago, that the country would go into ruin. Inflation in this country is the highest in the world. It could arguably be said it is as bad for Zimbabwe as it was for the Germans after WWII. I bet the next thing we hear from ole' Robbie is there is a plot against him and it is just propaganda spread against him by Westerners. Tell ya what Robbie boy. Why don't you go take a walk, without your bodyguards, down the streets of Harare for an afternoon. If the people are too hungry to fight against you does that mean you get to keep being the leader? With your permission, I will move Robert Mugabe from his comfortable position at number four, on the worst living Dictator's list, up a notch to three. Do you concur?
Kyoto Protocol. The United Nations convention on climate change is a step in the right direction. I do not fully agree with it because it allows the two most populous countries in the world, who incidentally contain nearly half of Earth's humans to be overlooked in their responsibilities for climate change, simply because they have a weaker economy. You can paint it any which way, but that is the way I see it. I have seen many rivers which are considered polluted, and unsuitable to drink from but have never seen pictures like the ones above. The second one is located in the Citarum River in Indonesia where the people are collecting the plastic and is the source of drinking water for many cities. The first picture is located in Wuhan, China where they have lost approximately 125 thousand kilos of fish in three days because of pollution in the water. Does a government in China, who has killed people for expressing their own views, who throws people in jail for criticizing the government, who spends a great deal of money censoring the internet, have a responsibility to make laws against those who display wanton cruelty to the environment?

Well, I finally had a chance to read this blog and was absolutely floored when I clicked on the photos to make them larger. I had no idea those were boats, the men were standing on. That is appalling! It remind me of when I used to go to the city dump in Richmond with my dad.
Why doesn't Dubya take his big guns in and tell them to clean up or else? He has his nose everywhere else so why not China.
someone,
Haven't you noticed that even when George claims to have "good intentions", he does more harm than good everywhere he goes? Are you hoping that even more people become violently oppressed in China? Is that why you're making such a ridiculous suggestion?
On another note, I agree that China has a responsibility to legislate environmental responsibility. So does every nation. Per capita, China has less of a record of environmental neglect than most other developed nations in the world, including Canada, Australia, and the US. It would be interesting if such nations started pointing their fingers at China.
"Country's in dispair"
Good line. I just don't get it, WHY some countries are in dispair, and others are not. Is it because of the political leaders or is it something simple - like not enough water? Take Africa for example, If they had water would they be prosporous?
Or maybe it is just neglect of the environment like China dumping pollutants into the river.
WHERE IS THE SOCIAL AND ENVIRONMENTAL RESPONSIBILITY?
Who is to blame?
Can we all be a part of the solution and not part of the problem?
Are we hypocrites, pointing our fingers at China and Africa, while we throw our candy wrappers on the steet?
If we didn't have proper sewage systems and clean toilets to use would we not also throw our waste into the river?
The thing that gets me is the desperation of the people in those third world countries, and yet they seem to get by in spite of the politics, unless of course guns are a part of the equation.
Gotta appreciate where we live, and it is not because we have done anything right. We were just born to the right parents in the right part of the world.
Sadost and Sigh..ost dost
bardost,
The anger and frustration you feel about these things is warranted. I feel it too. However, it is also compounding the problem. When someone like yourself can be looking at the situations from a wide perspective, it's easy to see the insanity of it all. But frustration and anger renders a person less effective in their abilities to come up with ways to help. So the question is, how do you see this kind of insanity without getting frustrated and angry?
If you saw a small island in the middle of the ocean that was being overrun by anthills, would you blame the ants? Each anthill starts war with others, and harvests all the meager vegetation the island produces, knocking down trees and destroying soil. If the ants don't have the scope of vision to see what they're doing to the island they live on, it's an unfortunate tragedy for the sentient and hard-working creatures.
Many humans recognize technological accomplishments as a way of ascribing the human race with more recognition than other lifeforms on our planet. In truth, we are better than some and worse than others. What truly makes a species great is its ability to co-exist and enrich the world's ability to support life. Independence of thought factors into this too.
I'm alright Psamy.
I am not angry, or frustrated. We live in the best part of the world.
Haven't you seen the new license plates? They say " BC the Best Place to Live" or something like that. I saw one on a brand new Hummer driving around today. New Hummer, new license, probably a new driver, and probably chinese. Who knows the windows were all darkened out.
I like your suggestion that we study the ants. I have a whole bunch of them out on the back yard. As a matter of fact I got some stuff for them. Hope it is not environmentally dangerous. I also have a critter taking up residence under my shed. Hope to borrow a shotgun soon and blow its brains out.
Hey, everyone has their own problems. We just deal with them as we see fit.
Here in Canada we use money, chemicals, and the odd bullet here and there, and we don't throw our used oil down the drain. We give it back to Canadian Tire and they SELL it back to us. Are we smart or what? At least our rivers are clean, well, you know not polluted but definetly not drinkable.
Hope I don't come across as a violent redneck. I am actually a peacemonger, pacifist, greenpeacer, Indian sympathiser, apathetic, non voting, taxpaying CANADIAN.
.... and proud of it.
(Gotta go get some mosquito spray)
